A current guide to Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), also known as Whole Life Cycle Assessments (WLC) for designers, engineers, architects and clients in the building and construction industry
As a nation, we are already experiencing the impact of climate change, with extreme weather events and record breaking temperatures. The government’s own data confirms this, “All 10 of the warmest years in the UK have occurred since 2003. 2022 was the UK’s hottest year on record, with an average year-round temperature above 10°C seen for the first time.”
Data released on 22 September 2023 confirmed another worrying trend; that the number of temperature-related deaths occurring during hotter days has more than doubled between 1990 and 2022. The Office for National Statistics says deaths have leaped by 102% in that timeframe, with a record 4,507 heat-related deaths in England in 2022.
As custodians of the built environment, it is up to the construction industry to ensure that our new residential and commercial buildings are comfortable, healthy, and habitable in the face of increasing temperatures – and crucially, that their construction and use over the next decades is sustainable, with a low carbon footprint and proactive approach to driving down carbon emissions both today and in the years to come to reverse the impact of climate change.
