Scope Of The Project
The Cole Gardens development proposal increases the existing density of a five-building site by developing the rooftop to include an additional twelve two-bedroom flats. Supporting the feasibility and planning process, we modelled the estimated energy requirements, as well as the associated CO2 emissions that the proposed development would generate.
Tools For Tasks Implementation
From our energy consumption models, we developed a robust strategy to reduce the energy demand and increase the supply through renewable energy sources. Based on the principles of passive design, our strategy will minimise heat-gain so that the cooling mechanisms represent 1.6% of the overall energy requirement.
Challenges For Tasks Implementation
Our models needed to factor in the London Plan for sustainable design and construction, as well as considering the fact that the scheme was in a conservation area.
In tandem with including a design to reduce consumption, we created a sustainable energy supply plan, including a diverse range of renewable energy sources:
- Solar thermal energy
- Ground source heat pumps, which use the earth’s energy to provide heating and cooling to buildings
- Electric driven air source heat pumps
- Wind turbines
- Combined heat and power systems
By evaluating how to reduce consumption and develop a diverse and sustainable supply, our energy strategy will out-perform the Building Regulations Part L (2013) ‘baseline’ for reducing CO2 emissions by 33.43%.
